Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Teachers use a variety of strategies, which include peer & self-evaluation, portfolios of student work, tests, journals, and teacher observations and assessment tools to measure student progress and achievement. Additional formal assessment is provided, as needed, through the Student Services Department (psychological, educational, speech & language, and social work assessments).

Other measures include:

  • Grade 6 provincial testing, CASI, PM Bench Marks, Evaluation Rapide
  • SIPSA Base Line Tools
  • Student Achievement Awards: Student of the Month and end of year achievement awards (Grade 4-8); French Incentives; sports awards (house league and all-star),
  • Oratory Competitions, and History Competitions/Fairs

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

Our school objectives are based on the principles of excellence, equity, accountability and partnerships.

Our focus in meeting the objectives has been as follows:

  • Meeting the needs of all students through collaborative planning and a multi-disciplinary team approach for special needs;
  • Including student portfolios and student-led conferencing in our student assessment plan;
  • Working with community partners such as the Youth Services Bureau, the Crime Prevention Council, the School Resource Officer the Regional Health Department, Ottawa-Community Immigration Services, and the Family Reception Centre

Specific Objectives for this year are as follows:

  • Developing Literacy/Numeracy Initiatives and Strategies
  • Specific goals in the School Improvement Plan for Student Achievement (SIPSA) are based on helping students develop the skills required to express their thinking using evidence. Focus will be on developing highly engaging tasks, providing effective feedback and having a whole school commitment to the concept of Accountable Talk
  • Collaborative Planning
  • Celebration Assemblies
  • Anti-Bullying Program – WITS at the Junior level
  • Variety of clubs and student activities
  • Positive, inclusive school environment
  • Student Success Program
  • Student Council
